Course description: Guided optical wave. Wave- and modal equation. Optical fiber with step- and gradient index of refraction. Modes. Attenuation, absorption, scattering. Phase- and group velocity, intermodal, materijal and waveguide dispersion. Optical semiconductor sources, laser, light emitting diode (LED). Semiconductor photodetectors, pin-, avalanche photodiode. Plastic fibers. Fabrication. Cabels. Optical networks, dense wavelength division multiplex (DWDM), subcarrier multiplex. Unguided optical communications in the atmosphere. Optical receivers. Direct, homodyne and heterodyne detection.
