Providing students with the knowledge of standard formats and style of professional communication common in the global business environment. Developing communication skills at an advanced level of English necessary in international business (focus on reading and writing skills supported by speaking and listening tasks): a) reading skills- understanding professional/academic texts dealing with business/economic issues (discourse structure), b) writing skills- writing summaries (producing organized discourse: introduction, clarity, structure, concision, completeness, accuracy, cohesion and coherence), business reports (clarity, text organisation: structure and graphics, referencing, cohesion, accuracy and precision), c) speaking skills- presenting (style, structure, signalling, clarity, visual organisation), class discussion (expressing opinion: style, argumentation), and d) listening skills (follow-up web sources). Developing lexical competence (business/economic/general vocabulary arising from class topics
The course is based on authentic texts dealing with economic/business/social/political issues serving as background material for the following: introduction to the course - importance of communication skills, academic/job requirements (college requirements, content analysis of job ads, CVs and letters of application); the reading process; text structure; notes/graphic organizers; presenting; the writing process; summarizing; writing reports; referencing and avoiding plagiarism.
