Course description:
This course aims to acquire knowledge and understanding of basic concepts in the field of security, national security and national security systems, but also contemporary security studies and concepts. Understanding of internal and external elements and processes (national interests, security environment) crucial for the national security policy of the Republic of Croatia as well as developing the ability to recognize and identify threats in the realization of national security. Understanding the scope, roles and relationships of the management, coordination and operational levels of the structure of the national security system. Developing the skills of critical analysis and comparative analysis of different security structures, security phenomena and learn the basic elements and methods of assessment and evaluation of the security situation.

Learning outcomes:

1. To define and connect facts and theoretical knowledge about the concept, types and factors of security and national security, and link national interests, security objectives and national security.

2. To identify and describe the elements of the security system: security policy, security structure and security self-organization and culture.

3. To analyze the roles and positions of the police, security intelligence services, coordination, guidance, supervisory and other bodies of formal social supervision in the national security system.

4. To present and explain the analysed units of security policies or structures, and identify critical national infrastructure.

5. To compare different security systems and elements of different security structures.

6. To analyse the security situation and the elements for evaluating that situation as well as security phenomena that affect the security situation.

7. To predict and evaluate possible risks from various threats to national security.
