Course description:
The aim of the course is to acquire facts related to the basic tenets of harmony as a theoretical musical discipline. Acquiring knowledge related to the voicing and treatment of fifth chords, 6 chords, 6-4 chords, D7 and secondary septachords in classical vocal four-part texture. Getting to know the basic approaches of harmonic analysis of a composition. Mastery over simpler tasks in harmonizing given sopranos and basses. Content according to class schedule: 1. On the meaning of harmonic analysis. Harmony as a vertical structure in a composition; regarding the different meanings of the term harmony. 2. Fifth chords; Setting of the fifth chord in four part texture; Range of voices in vocal quartet; voicing and position of the chord. 3. Harmonic progressions with the use of fifth chords of main degrees. 4. Main and secondary degrees. Soprano harmonization with fifth chords of diatonic degrees. 5. Sixth chords; distribution and doubling of tones; 6 chord of the second degree in a cadence. 6. Tasks with 6 chords, Cadences: the importance of cadences in the overall harmonic role in the construction of a musical form; types of cadences. Examples from harmonic analysis, recognizing cadences. 7. 6-4 chords. Setting up and resolving; suspension, alternating, passing, inverted 6-4 chords. 8. Harmonic analysis, examples with fifth chords, 6 chords and 6-4 chords. 9. Tasks with fifth chords, 6 chords and 6-4 chords. 10. Dominant seventh chord, setting up, resolution; inversions of the dominant seventh chord; exceptional cases of resolving the seventh. 11. Secondary seventh chords in major. Setting up and resolving. 12. Secondary seventh chords in minor. Setting up and resolving. 13. Secondary seventh chords in minor. Setting up and resolving. 14. Practicing tasks for the exam. 15. Practicing tasks for the exam.

Learning outcomes:

1. Be able to define the basic tenets of the traditional discipline of Harmony;

2. Apply knowledge related to fifth chords and inversions, D7 and inversions and secondary seventh chords in simpler harmonic tasks with given sopranos and basses;

3. Recognize basic harmonic concepts in examples from artistic music literature.

4. Synthetise musical-analytical, aesthetic and technical knowledge and skills on the instrument with the performance of the work.

5. Connect the acquired knowledge and skills with own artistic ideas.

6. Apply the acquired knowledge and skills to a distinctive stylistic performance in public performance.
