Course description:
Thematic units: - General features of 20th century music; - Impressionism, musical impressionism; - Features of musical language c. Debussy - C. Debussy: Prelude III, E minor, analysis; - C. Debussy: Prelude IV, A major, analysis; - Musical expressionism; - Second Viennese School; - A. Schőnberg, compositional stages; - A. Schönberg. Nacht, Pierrot lunaire, analysis; - A. Webern: Fünf Canons op. 16, analysis; - A. Schönberg: Drei Klavierstücke, op.11, analysis; - A. Schönberg: Variations for orchestra op.31, analysis Seminar papers: C. Debussy, preludes for piano.

Learning outcomes:

1. List the features of musical impressionism and musical expressionism

2. - Explain the connection between late romantic musical characteristics and New music;

3. - Analyze compositions of impressionistic stylistic determination;

4. - Explain the meaning and structural significance of the interval cell;

5. - Explain the basic features and technique of composing dodecaphony;

6. - Analyze compositions written using the 12-tone composition technique;

7. Write a seminar paper with an elaborate analysis of a piano piece by C.A. Debussy.

8. Analyse and interpret different components of a musical work such as musical form, composition technique, harmonic and polyphonic component, orchestration.

9. Form one's own mature artistic concepts.

10. Sing, prima vista, a demanding tonal and atonal example.

11. Synthetise the acquired knowledge and skills in the fields of music-theory or music-methodology.

12. Compose a smaller opera.

13. Compose larger one-movement compositions for a large symphony orchestra.

14. Compose larger multi-composition compositions for a symphony orchestra with combinations with soloists or choir, and with the use of added orchestral instruments or electronics.

15. Compose larger multi-movement compositions for a symphony orchestra.

16. Aurally recognise musical artwork with regard to the historical period of origin, stylistic and compositional characteristics, style and tonal provenance.

17. Aurally recognise musical artwork with regard to the historical period of origin, stylistic and compositional characteristics, style, instrumental composition and tonal provenance.

18. Use music notation software.

19. Create one's own artistic ideas based on electronic sound.

20. Collaborate in the field of music creation in art institutions, media, libraries and music publications.
