Course description:
Objectives of the course: ACQUISITION OF THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE BASIC LAWS OF INSTRUMENTATION. GETTING TO KNOW THE TECHNICAL AND PERFORMANCE POSSIBILITIES OF STRING INSTRUMENTS THROUGH A SERIES OF SHORT AND LONGER EXERCISES. APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE TECHNICAL POSSIBILITIES OF EACH STRING INSTRUMENT AND THEIR INTERRELATIONS THROUGH THE INSTRUMENTATION OF SHORTER AND LONGER SITUATIONS, CHORDS AND SHORTER FORMS. LEARNING BASIC INSTRUMENTATION SKILLS WITH RESPECT TO HARMONY, MELODY AND COLOR WITHIN THE STRING Ensemble. GETTING TO KNOW THE SOUND BALANCE AND REGISTER BALANCE BETWEEN STRING INSTRUMENTS. CONTROL OF VOLUME AND INTENSITY WHEN JOINING STRING INSTRUMENTS IN UNISON AND OCTAVE. The content of the course elaborated in detail according to the class schedule: 1. Introduction to instrumentation and introduction to basic terms. Orchestra, instrumental groups, score. 2. String instruments, general characteristics and their technical performance possibilities. Listening and analyzing examples from music literature (B. Britten: Simple symphony, Paganini: 24 Caprices ...). 3. Application of knowledge about the technical possibilities of the violin through exercises (Paganini) and creation of situations in which all types of violin articulations are used. Listening and detailed analysis (articulation) of B. Britten's composition: Simple symphony. 4. Application of knowledge about the technical possibilities through exercises and creation of situations in which basic articulation is required for the viola. Acquiring knowledge about the characteristics of strings, two-parts, three-part and four-part chords. Listening and analysis of the String Quartet (F major) by M. Ravel. Isolating and analysing of situations. Creation of shorter situations for viola solo. 5. Application of knowledge about the technical capabilities of the cello through practice and creation of situations in which basic articulation with the cello is required. Listening and analyzing situations for cello solo (Piatti: 12 Capricen, op.25 will serve as an example). 6. Application of knowledge about the basic technical possibilities of the double bass through exercises and creation of situations for basic articulation with the double bass. (Examples from literature: Z. Kodaly: 7 epigrams for double bass). 7. Application of knowledge through creation of different situations for string quintet (string orchestra). A series of exercises and situations from the manual (Rakov). 8. Creation of different situations in joining string instruments in unison, and instrumentation of chords. Listening and analyzing works from literature. 9. Joint creation of a score for string orchestra from a piano excerpt (Rakov). 10. Reverse procedure - creation of a piano excerpt from a string quartet: M. Ravel: String Quartet (F major), Debussy: String Quartet in G minor (or part from a composition for string orchestra). Modes of reduction for attaining the adequate sound. 11. Joint creation of a score for strings from a piano excerpt (Rakov). Listening and brief analysis of parts from Serenade for strings, E major op.22, A. Dvorak. 12. Making a score for strings from a piano excerpt - Rakov (students make the score independently under the supervision of a mentor). Listening and brief analysis of parts from Serenade for strings in C major op.48, P.I. Tchaikovsky. 13. Independent creation of a score for strings from a piano excerpt (Rakov) under the supervision of a mentor. Analysis of characteristic excerpts from P. I. Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings. 14. Independent creation of a score for strings from a piano excerpt. Comparison, listening and analysis of characteristic excerpts from Transfigured Night (Verklarte Nacht) op.4 by A. Schonberg. 15.
