Course description:
PRACTICAL FAMILIARITY WITH THE TECHNICAL-PERFORMANCE POSSIBILITIES OF WIND (WOOD AND BRASS) INSTRUMENTS THROUGH A SERIES OF SHORT AND LONGER EXERCISES. APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE TECHNICAL POSSIBILITIES OF EACH WIND INSTRUMENT AND THEIR INTERRELATIONS THROUGH THE INSTRUMENTATION OF SHORTER AND LONGER SITUATIONS, CHORDS AND SHORTER FORMS. ACQUISITION OF BASIC INSTRUMENTATION SKILLS WITH RESPECT TO THE REGISTER COLOR OF EACH INSTRUMENT. MASTERING VOLUME AND INTENSITY WHEN JOINING WOODWIND INSTRUMENTS IN UNison. GETTING TO KNOW THE BALANCE OF SOUND WHEN JOINING WOODWIND AND STRING INSTRUMENTS, WHEN JOINING WOODWIND AND BRASS INSTRUMENTS AND JOINING BRASS AND STRING INSTRUMENTS IN UNISON. Course content according to class schedule: 1. Woodwind instruments. General characteristics and line-up in the orchestra. Wind quintet, instrument transpositions, score for wind quintet. Practical exercises and situations for instrumentation. 2. Flute. Listening and analysis of articulations for flute (W. A. Mozart: Sonata in E minor, S. Karg Elert: Etudes for flute). Prepared materials as a sample for independent realization of the melodic line for the flute. Practical exercises and situations for wind quintet. 3. Oboe. Listening and analysis of short passages regrding articulation. Specificities of registers, selected works for oboe (Mozart: Concerto for oboe (KV314) C major). Prepared materials as a sample for independent realization of melodic lines for oboe. Practical exercises, instrumentation of chords and situations for quartet. 4. Clarinet. Listening and analysis of articulation. Prepared materials as a sample for independent realization of characteristic melodic lines for clarinet. Listening and analysis: Mozart: Clarinet Concerto, A major (KV622), J.Francaix: Clarinet Quintet (1977), Clarinet Etudes. Practical exercises and situations for woodwind quintet. 5. Bassoon. Listening and analyzing selected examples regarding bassoon articulation. Mozart: Bassoon Concerto, B flat major, KV191, Vivaldi: Concerto RV 484, Saint-Saens: Sonata for bassoon and piano, op. 168.). 6. Creation of a score for wind quintet from a piano excerpt. Instrumentation of less complex situations for woodwind quartet. Examples: J. Francaix: Wind Quintet No. 1, E Major, Mozart: Serenade for Winds, No. 11 in E Flat Major, KV375. 7. Creation of a score for wind quintet by elaboration of a piano excerpt (medium level of difficulty). 8. Instrumentation of medium complex situations for woodwinds and horns, production scores by developing a piano excerpt. 9. Brass quintet. General characteristics. Listening and analysis of examples for articulation (Handel, Water Music, Music for fireworks). 10. Trumpet. Listening and analysis of articulation for trumpet (Hindemith, Trumpet Sonata, Haydn, Trumpet Concerto in E flat major). 11. Creation of practical situations, arrangement of chords in a brass quintet. 12. Horn. Articulation analysis, examples from the literature. Practical situational exercises for woodwinds and horns (simpler forms). 13. Trombone and tuba. Examples from literature (R.Korsakov, Trombone Concerto, Papandopulo, Trombone Concerto). Creation of characteristic melodic patterns for trombone and tuba. Practical exercises for brass quintet. 14. Creating a score for a brass quintet from a piano excerpt. Listening and analysis (Strauss, Horn Concerto No. 1). 15. Creating a score for a brass quintet from a piano excerpt.

Learning outcomes:

1. Making a score of simpler or medium difficulty for a woodwind quintet by working out a piano excerpt.

2. Izrada partiture jednostavnije težine za limeni puhački kvintet razradom klavirskog izvatka.

3. Orchsetrate compositions of simpler texture for woodwind and brass quintets.

4. Write a simpler composition (etude) for one of the woodwind instruments.

5. Adapt a music score for different types of vocal and instrumental ensembles.
