Course description:
Objectives of the course: - getting to know the polyphonic baroque compositional techniques, - understanding and evaluating polyphonic procedures and determining their role in the structure of a musical piece, - getting to know the stylistic features, - forming aesthetic criteria, - application of acquired knowledge in making a two-voice invention. Course content - each unit in two hours of lectures: 1. melodic and meter-rhythmic characteristics of the baroque polyphonic style, 2. harmonic features of baroque polyphonic style, treatment of dissonance, 3. features of two-parts; analysis of examples from literature (J.S.Bach), 4. species of imitation, double counterpoint, 5. sequence in contrapuntal forms, 6. exercises in free two-parts - creation of the second voice, 7. the first part of two-voice invention - principles, literature analysis, 8. creation of the first part of the invention (type of invention with a shorter topic), 9. the second part of the invention - principles, literature analysis, 10. creation of the second part of the invention, 11. the third part of two-parts invention - principles, literature analysis, 12. creation of the third part of the invention, 13. creation of an invention with a longer topic - first part, 14. creation of the second part of the invention,

Learning outcomes:

1. Analyse and interpret the most important works for piano.

2. Analyse and interpret different components of a musical work such as musical form, harmonic and polyphonic component.

3. Analyse and interpret different components of a musical work such as musical form, composition technique, harmonic and polyphonic component.

4. Apply the acquired knowledge and skills to a distinctive stylistic performance in a public performance.

5. Synthetise musical-analytical, aesthetic and technical knowledge and skills on the instrument during the performance of a work.

6. Aurally recognise musical artwork with regard to the historical period of origin and stylistic characteristics.

7. Interpret the general compositional characteristics of the most important piano composers.
