Course description:
Objectives of the course: - getting to know the polyphonic baroque compositional techniques, - understanding and evaluating polyphonic procedures and determining their role in the structure of a musical piece, - getting to know the stylistic features, - forming aesthetic criteria, - application of acquired knowledge in making a three-part fugue. Course content - each unit in two hours of lectures. 1. analysis of three-part compositions - harmonic and melodic features. 2. exercises in three-part - the remaining two are made on the given melody, 3. generally about the shape of the fugue, 4. theme of fugue; realistic, tonal and modulating response, 5. countersubject - analysis and creation of permanent counterpoint, 6. exposition of the fugue - analysis of examples from the literature, 7. composing of the exposition, 8. extended exposition and counter exposition, 9. external interjection; sequence types, 10. development part - literature analysis, 11. stretta, theme in inversion, theme in augmentation and diminution - literature analysis, 12. stretta - composing, 13. composing of the development part of the fugue, 14. final part - literature analysis, 15. composing of the final part of the fugue.

Learning outcomes:

1. Analyse and interpret the most important works for piano.

2. Analyse and interpret different components of a musical work such as musical form, harmonic and polyphonic component.

3. Apply the acquired knowledge and skills to a distinctive stylistic performance in a public performance.

4. Synthetise musical-analytical, aesthetic and technical knowledge and skills on the instrument during the performance of a work.

5. Aurally recognise musical artwork with regard to the historical period of origin and stylistic characteristics.

6. Interpret the general compositional characteristics of the most important piano composers.
