Course description:
The general goal of this course is to get to know the polyphonic compositional technique with regard to its role and importance in the development of musical art, and to build aesthetic criteria through analytical and practical overcoming of the stylistic features of a certain historical period; in the framework of this subject, Renaissance. Special goals: - adopt the basic terms related to the system of counterpoint species as systematized by J. Fux. - adopt the basic rules of two-part and three-part vocal counterpoint. - develop the skill of composing according to the adopted rules. - achieve awareness of the role of dissonance within the Renaissance vocal style. - to gain awareness of the elements of musical form at the initial level of polyphonic technique in the sense of beginning, development, ending. Each thematic unit is covered within four hours of lectures, which also includes mentoring work with each student individually: - Definition of polyphony. Historical development of polyphonic thinking from the first forms of polyphony to the 20th century. - Modes. Rules for building a melody. - Melodic and harmonic intervals. Fux's contrapuntal species. - Beginnings and endings in two-part counterpoint. First and second species. - The third specie. - Syncope in two-part counterpoint. Floridus. - Treatment of text. Free two-part counterpoint. - Imitation in two-parts. - Special types of imitation: inversion, augmentation, diminution. - Three-parts. Beginnings and endings in three-part counterpoint. Species: first and second species. - The third specie. Syncope in three-part counterpoint. - Combinations of species: second and third species, second and fourth species. - Combinations of species: third and fourth species. - Free three-part counterpoint on the given text. - Imitation in three-part on the given text.

Learning outcomes:

1. Analyse and interpret different components of a musical work such as musical form, composition technique, harmonic and polyphonic component, orchestration.

2. Harmonise and improvise given melodic templates on the piano.

3. Perform piano accompaniment of choral or moderately demanding instrumental and singing compositions.

4. Form one's own mature artistic concepts.

5. Sing, prima vista, a demanding tonal and atonal example.

6. Adapt a music score for different types of vocal and instrumental ensembles.

7. Synthetise acquired technical, formal and sound-shaping knowledge and skills and apply them in composing works for smaller symphony orchestra, chamber brass orchestra combining them with solo instruments or voice.

8. Aurally recognise musical artwork with regard to the historical period of origin, stylistic and compositional characteristics, style and tonal provenance.

9. Aurally reconstruct and record tonal musical examples of single-, two-, three- and four-voices.

10. Use music notation software.

11. Collaborate in the field of music creation in art institutions, media, libraries and music publications.

12. Play music scores of choral and orchestral compositions on the piano.
