Course description:
The general goal of this course is to get to know the polyphonic compositional technique with regard to its role and importance in the development of musical art, and to build aesthetic criteria through analytical and practical mastery of the stylistic features of a certain historical period; here Renaissance. Special goals: - adopt the basic rules of four-part vocal counterpoint. - adopt the basic rules of canonical technique. - apply the acquired knowledge in composing basic polyphonic forms according to the given model: two-part fughetta, two-part canon, three-part canon with additional voice, four-part motet to the given text. - recognition and interpretation of polyphonic techniques and forms in the examples from literature. Contrapuntal species in four parts: beginnings and endings, first specie - 2 hours of lectures. - Second and third species - 4 hours of lectures. - Fourth specie - 2 hours of lectures. - Floridus in one voice in four-parts - 2 hours of lectures. - Combinations of species in four-parts - 8 hours of lectures. - Floridus in two and three voices in four-parts - 6 hours of lectures. - Imitation in four-parts - 4 hours of lectures. - Creation of polyphonic forms according to the given model: canon in two-part and three-part - 8 hours of lectures. - Two-part fughetta with application of the canon in the final part - 4 hours of lectures. - Four-part motet with four imitation epizodes to the given text - 20 hours of lectures.

Learning outcomes:

1. Analyse and interpret different components of a musical work such as musical form, composition technique, harmonic and polyphonic component, orchestration.

2. Harmonise and improvise given melodic templates on the piano.

3. Perform piano accompaniment of choral or moderately demanding instrumental and singing compositions.

4. Form one's own mature artistic concepts.

5. Sing, prima vista, a demanding tonal and atonal example.

6. Adapt a music score for different types of vocal and instrumental ensembles.

7. Synthetise acquired technical, formal and sound-shaping knowledge and skills and apply them in composing works for smaller symphony orchestra, chamber brass orchestra combining them with solo instruments or voice.

8. Aurally recognise musical artwork with regard to the historical period of origin, stylistic and compositional characteristics, style and tonal provenance.

9. Aurally reconstruct and record tonal musical examples of single-, two-, three- and four-voices.

10. Use music notation software.

11. Collaborate in the field of music creation in art institutions, media, libraries and music publications.

12. Play music scores of choral and orchestral compositions on the piano.
