Course description:
Contemporary Art III aims to, in combining diachronic (events after 1945) and synchronic (art object and institutional framework) tracking of phenomena in art after 1945, familiarise students with foundations of the paradigm shift from modernism to postmodernism (to contemporary art) and with: a) Relationship between concepts of artwork, art theory, artist's theory, theory in art, on the basis of appropriation art, b) Relationship between the work and the author, artist (modern genius) and the work and the author, creator of meaning or reality (in the sense of postmodernism and plurality of discourses), c) Guiding thread of the course is an introduction to structuralism and pattern of its transition towards poststructuralist interpretations of art (Barthes, Foucault, Derrida) that simultaneously are foundations of postmodernist turn, the emergence of iconic and pictorial turn). The goal is to establish a connection between contemporary art and the trends that preceded it (both in production and reception). They are defined by loss of previous boundaries, for instance, between: a) painting and sculpture, b) concept of the original and the copy (multiple, simulacrum), c) mimetic and nonmimetic art. This corresponds to changes in the perception of reality (space, time) in light of new technologies and reproduction, the presence of which in art have paradigmatically emerged around the 1960s and continued to this day, including the terms simulacrum (Baudrillard) and relational aesthetics (Nicolas Bourriaud), as well as art of participation (Boris Greuys). Student presentations complementing Contemporary Art 3 teaching programme: The course content is realised during the 6th semester through individually agreed topics: individual theme, interpretation of a style or its representative in art after 1945 with focus on: a) space (picture as a plane or an object) b) creative subject c) art institutions - individually agreed topic of Bachelor thesis

2. Recognise and explain basic terminology and the key names of participants and artistic groups within a thematic unit.

3. Develop visual perception in recognising different forms of artistic expression (primarily in the field of installations, video production, multimedia and performance) in which the relationship between high and popular culture is manifested, and identify

4. Develop a critical approach and adopt a richer vocabulary when articulating the contents in question.

6. Define the contents and interpret the theoretical discourse of visual studies as well as opposing theoretical positions.

7. Name, recognise and explain the basic concepts related to the forms and principles of design functions.

8. Single out and name the starting points of cultural studies that support the social positioning of the role of art in new readings of older works of art history.

9. Critically analyse design works and products.

10. Be able to articulate the stages of a process as elements of a more complex artistic whole.

11. Explain the emergence, social conditioning, and the main features and historical changes in the content of the concept of design.

12. Hold oral presentations on professional topics and discuss them.

13. Write an author's statement about the work, a textual form that concisely presents a short technical, artistic and content-based description of the work.

14. Become aware of the unpredictability and uncertainty of the development of an idea within the process.

15. Connect design practice with theoretical terms and concepts.

16. Present the information gathered through individual study and argue one's own position.

17. Develop a critical approach and the acquisition of a richer vocabulary for its articulation in selected examples and contents.

18. Develop a critical approach concerning the nature of aesthetic judgments.

19. Develop a critical approach and acquire a richer vocabulary when articulating selected examples and content.

20. Develop visual perception in the recognition of different art expressions in modernism and postmodernism.

21. Be familiar with the functioning of public cultural exhibiting institutions and media and gain experience in communication and cooperation with them in terms of presenting one's own or joint work (exhibitions, workshops, festivals, etc.).
