Course description:
The main objectives of the course are: Get to know the origin and development of tonal and harmonic systems of the 20th century. Understanding the role of individual components of the musical language (tonal system, melody, harmony) in the construction of forms at the micro and macro level. Acquiring the skill of an analytical approach to a musical work. Acquiring the skill of classification and interpretation by analyzing the obtained results, orally and in writing. Each thematic unit is covered in two hours of lectures. - Romantic harmony: mediantika - different kind of tertiary relationships. - Analysis of examples from literature (Chopin, Schumann, Liszt). - Impressionism: the historical-aesthetic framework of creation. - Impressionistic harmony: chords, chord progressions, scales. - Analysis of preludes by C. Debussy. - Neoclassicism: analysis of selected examples from the works of Stjepan Šulek. - Chromatic system in 20th century music (Bartok). - Analysis of Petar Bergamo's String Quartet. - Theory of tonality by P. Hindemith: sequence 1, sequence 2, classification of chords into groups. - Analysis of selected examples from the Ludus tonalis collection. - Scale system of O. Messiaen. - Theories of interval tensions (Persichetti, Brindle). - Compiled modes of Ruben Radica. - Formation of chords using the mode selection model. - Harmonization of the melody in the new tonal system.

Learning outcomes:

1. Analyse and interpret different components of a musical work such as musical form, composition technique, harmonic and polyphonic component, orchestration.

2. Form one's own mature artistic concepts.

3. Sing, prima vista, a demanding tonal and atonal example.

4. Synthetise acquired technical, formal and sound-shaping knowledge and skills and apply them in composing works for smaller symphony orchestra, chamber brass orchestra combining them with solo instruments or voice.

5. Aurally recognise musical artwork with regard to the historical period of origin, stylistic and compositional characteristics, style and tonal provenance.

6. Use music notation software.

7. Create one's own artistic ideas based on electronic sound.

8. Collaborate in the field of music creation in art institutions, media, libraries and music publications.

9. Play music scores of choral and orchestral compositions on the piano.
