Course description:
Acquiring basic information about the organ, its historical development and different European schools of construction and types of musical instruments. Getting to know the basic organ registers and their common use in solo and chamber music. Acquiring the basic technique of playing on the manual/manuals with occasional use of pedals; differences in the approach to playing the classical organ compared to electronic instruments. Acquaintance with the basic organ (instructive, soloist and liturgical) literature. Popularization of organ music and organ playing. Content according to class schedule: 1st week: (2 hours of lectures): Introductory lectures: On the history, technical structure of the organ and playing techniques. Overview of historical European schools of building and playing the organ; the most important representatives and forms (with reference to Croatian circumstances). 2nd - 4th week: (4 hours of lectures, 4 hours of exercises): Tour and demonstration of several organs in Split and its surroundings; positioning at the instrument, position of hands and feet and performance of simpler, previously known (during earlier musical training) learned compositions (possibly also those that were originally intended for the harpsichord and/or piano and which can also be performed on the organ) from the Baroque period on the manual. 5th week: (2 hours of lectures, 2 hours of exercises): basic organ exercises for manual and/or pedal with emphasis on touch, articulation and agogics. The significance and function of the organ in the liturgy. 6th - 15th week: (6 hours of lectures and work on selected compositions, 10 hours of exercises): practice with work on stylistics and interpretation of selected compositions of appropriate level of difficulty (see literature list).

Learning outcomes:

1. Knowledge of basic types and types of organs, their technical and musical functions.

2. Knowing and correctly performing basic exercises and simple compositions for manual and pedal (separately and/or in combination).

3. Adoption of the organ style of performance and interpretation of technically appropriate compositions by European and Croatian authors from the Renaissance, Baroque and Romantic periods.

4. Adoption of the basics of the liturgical use of the organ and the accompaniment of choirs and soloists.
